Find a trusted concreter in Melbourne

Looking for a concreter in Melbourne for a new driveway, a shed slab or paths that won't crack on clay? Tell us roughly how many square metres and what's there now. We'll match you with one local concreter after checking their insurance, reviews and any registration the job needs. One concreter to talk to, not five.

Common concreter jobs in Melbourne

  • Replacing driveways cracked by tree roots or moving clay
  • Exposed aggregate driveways and paths
  • Shed, carport and garage slabs
  • Alfresco and patio slabs off the back of the house
  • Driveways and crossovers for new homes in the growth suburbs
  • Breaking out and carting away old concrete
  • Paths down the side of the house, with falls and drainage
  • Coloured and stencilled concrete around pools

Reactive clay and basalt under the slab

Much of Melbourne is built on reactive clay that swells in wet winters and shrinks back through dry summers. Concrete laid on a poorly compacted base, or without enough steel, cracks as the ground moves, which is why cracked driveways are such a familiar sight in older streets. A careful concreter digs down to firm ground, compacts a crushed rock base, uses the right mesh and cuts control joints so any cracking follows a straight line.

In the western and northern suburbs, basalt rock often sits close to the surface. Breaking through it for edge beams, footings or a level base takes a rock breaker and extra time, so ask whether the quote allows for it before the excavator turns up.

Weather, crossovers and council permits

Concrete is fussy about the weather. On a cold winter morning it cures slowly, and rain can spoil a fresh finish, so Melbourne pours get pushed back more often in winter. On a hot day with a northerly blowing, the surface can dry too fast and crack, so good crews start early and keep the slab damp while it cures.

The crossover between your boundary and the road belongs to the council. A new or widened one needs a vehicle crossing permit and has to be built to the council’s specification, and some councils also want an asset protection permit before trucks and pumps cross the footpath. Ask your concreter whether those fees are in the price.

Water matters as much as the concrete. Driveways, paths and patios should fall away from the house, and on many blocks the runoff needs a grated drain tied into the property’s stormwater pipes rather than spilling into the neighbour’s yard or under your floor.

Registration, contracts and deposits

Once concreting on a home tops $10,000, the person doing it generally has to hold Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) registration, usually as Domestic Builder (Limited) in footings and slab work. Check the name on BPC Find a practitioner (builders). Smaller jobs need no registration, so the ABN and insurance are what to look at. For domestic building contracts, Victorian law caps the deposit at 10% under $20,000 and 5% from $20,000 up. Our Victorian licence checks page walks through the lookup.

What concreting costs in Melbourne

Melbourne usually comes in below Sydney for plain concrete. Laid over a prepared base with mesh, plain finishes typically cost somewhere around $70 to $140 a square metre, while exposed aggregate runs about $100 to $220. A shed or patio slab of 20 to 40 m² typically costs $2,000 to $6,000, and pump hire for a back yard the truck can’t reach adds $450 to $800. The concreting price guide has the details; it’s a guide, not a quote.

Concreters in Melbourne: common questions

What does concreting cost per square metre in Melbourne?
Plain concrete laid on a prepared base with mesh usually costs around $70 to $140 per m² in Melbourne, and exposed aggregate $100 to $220 per m². A plain double driveway of about 50 m² typically comes to $4,000 to $9,000. Digging through basalt, removing an old slab, pump hire and a council crossover are usually extra, so ask for each as its own line.
How much do concreters charge per m³?
Most concreters quote per square metre or for the whole job rather than per cubic metre. The concrete itself, standard 25 MPa ready-mix delivered, runs about $375 to $480 per m³ before labour and pumping, and small loads can attract extra fees. A 100 mm thick driveway uses about a cubic metre for every 10 m², so 50 m² needs roughly 5 m³, plus a little spare.
What Australian standards apply to concreting?
For homes, the main ones are AS 2870 for residential slabs and footings, AS 3600 for concrete structures generally, and AS 3727.1 for residential pavements such as driveways, paths, patios and crossovers. House slabs are designed by an engineer to AS 2870 based on how reactive the site's soil is. For a driveway, ask your concreter about base depth, mesh, joint spacing and falls.
Do I need a permit for a concrete driveway in Melbourne?
The driveway inside your boundary often doesn't need one, but the crossover from your boundary to the road belongs to the council. Councils want a vehicle crossing permit for a new or wider crossover and set out how it must be built, and some ask for an asset protection permit on top. Ask whether your concreter's quote covers the applications and fees.
Why do concrete driveways crack in Melbourne?
Mostly because the ground underneath moves. Reactive clay expands as it soaks up water and contracts as it dries out, and a thin slab on a poorly compacted base, or one without enough steel, cracks as it does. Tree roots lift slabs too. Control joints cut at the right spacing make the concrete crack along a neat line instead of across the middle, which is why a good concreter always includes them.
