Common concreter jobs in Gold Coast

  • Exposed aggregate driveways on new homes in the northern growth suburbs
  • Non-slip pool surrounds and alfresco slabs
  • Jackhammering out a cracked, lifted driveway and pouring a new one
  • Shed, carport and caravan slabs
  • Vehicular crossings built to the City of Gold Coast's standards
  • Side paths and bin pads along narrow lots
  • Resurfacing and sealing tired, stained driveways
  • Coloured and stencilled concrete for patios

Clay, sand and why driveways crack

Ground conditions change a lot across the Gold Coast. Beachside suburbs sit on sand, many canal estates were built up with dredged fill, and parts of the hillside and northern estates are on clay that swells after heavy summer rain and shrinks through the drier winter. That movement is what cracks a slab laid on a poor base. A good concreter compacts the base properly, uses the right mesh and thickness, cuts control joints so any cracks follow a straight line, and gives the surface enough fall to shed water away from the house.

Weather shapes the job too. Summer afternoons can bring a storm that wrecks a fresh finish, and hot days make concrete go off fast, so Gold Coast concreters often start pours at first light. If a pour gets pushed back because of rain, that’s a sign of a careful operator, not a slack one.

Pool areas and the City’s crossing rules

Pool surrounds are among the most common concreting jobs here, and the finish matters more than the colour. Exposed aggregate, broom and salt finishes give grip underfoot when wet. Lighter colours stay cooler on bare feet in summer. Leave room in your plans for the pool fence, since its posts and gaps have to satisfy Queensland’s pool safety rules once the concrete’s down.

The City of Gold Coast treats the driveway and the vehicular crossing as two separate things. The driveway sits on your land; the crossing runs across the footpath to the road, on public land, and you’re responsible for building and maintaining it. A new or modified crossing needs City approval, and a standard one still needs a local law licence. Make sure your quote says who’s handling that.

QBCC licence for concreting

Once concreting tops $3,300 including labour and materials, Queensland requires the contractor to be QBCC-licensed, in the Concreting class or as a builder. With a single driveway starting at a few thousand dollars, nearly every residential job needs one. Search for the concreter on the QBCC licensee register; the licence should be current and held by the same business that’s quoting you. Other Queensland registers are covered in our Queensland licence checks.

What a concreter costs on the Gold Coast

Gold Coast concreting prices sit close to Brisbane’s. Plain concrete driveways typically cost $2,500 to $6,000 (single) or $4,000 to $9,000 (double), while a double in exposed aggregate is closer to $6,000 to $12,000. A 20 to 40 m² slab for a shed or patio usually comes in between $2,000 and $6,000, and if the agitator truck can’t get close, a concrete pump adds about $450 to $800. All figures in our concreting price guide are indicative, not quotes.

Concreters in Gold Coast: common questions

What does a concrete slab cost on the Gold Coast?
On the Gold Coast, a slab for a shed, carport or patio in the 20 to 40 m² range usually costs about $2,000 to $6,000. Where it lands depends on thickness, edge beams and footings. Plain concrete on a prepared base works out around $70 to $140 per m², and cutting into a slope, pumping or breaking out old concrete will lift the total.
How much is concrete per m² in Queensland?
For concrete laid and finished on a prepared base, Queensland homeowners typically pay about $70 to $140 per m² for a plain finish, or $100 to $220 per m² for exposed aggregate. Buying ready-mix only? Standard 25 MPa concrete is roughly $375 to $480 a cubic metre delivered, not counting labour or a pump. Small loads can carry an extra fee.
How much for a 30 m² driveway on the Gold Coast?
Budget around $2,500 to $6,000 for 30 m² of plain concrete, including base preparation and mesh, or roughly $3,500 to $7,500 if you choose exposed aggregate. Demolishing an old driveway, building the crossing out to the road, hiring a pump or dealing with a steep site can each lift the price, so get them itemised on the quote.
Is it cheaper to concrete or pave a driveway?
Plain concrete and basic concrete pavers land in a similar range per m², so the gap is often smaller than people expect. Exposed aggregate and natural stone pavers both cost more. Concrete is quicker to lay over a big area and needs little upkeep, while pavers are easier to lift and repair if tree roots or a pipe job disturb them later.
Does the City of Gold Coast need to approve my driveway?
Usually only part of it. The City approves the vehicular crossing, the strip between your front boundary and the road, and even a crossing built to its standard design needs a local law licence. The section on your own land often needs no approval. Check that your concreter has priced in the application and a crossing built to the City's specifications.
