  • Keying the front door, screen doors and side gate alike

  • Keypad and smart lock upgrades on the front door

Screen doors, side gates and the keys you inherit

When you move into a Perth home, the number of locks can catch you out. Plenty of houses have a security screen door at the front and often the back, each with its own cylinder, plus sliding door locks, a side gate, the garage and maybe a shed. Previous owners, tenants, tradies and neighbours may all hold copies. Rekeying the lot to one key is usually cheaper than replacing every lock, and a locksmith can do it in a single visit.

Screen doors cop the weather too. Sand, dust and summer heat stiffen the lock mechanisms, and a door that has dropped on its hinges stops latching properly. A locksmith can service or replace the lock, but if the frame has moved, it may need a screen door repairer as well.

Rentals, strata and a spread-out city

WA sets minimum security standards for rental homes, including a deadlock or a compliant key-lockable security screen door on the main entry door, so property managers often book a locksmith between tenancies to rekey and bring a place up to standard. If you’re a landlord, it’s cheaper to have that done in one planned visit than as an urgent call when a tenant moves in.

Strata is different again. Many apartment and townhouse complexes use restricted key systems: only the locksmith who registered the system can cut keys for it, and only once the strata company signs off. If your building is on one, start with your strata manager.

Then there’s the distance. The metro area runs from Yanchep in the north to Mandurah in the south and out to the hills, and some locksmiths charge extra to travel to the edges. A locksmith based near you usually keeps the call-out down.

Checking a locksmith’s licence in WA

Locksmiths in WA are licensed by the WA Police Force (Licensing Enforcement Division). Anyone installing or repairing locks, safes or security doors for other people needs a security installer licence, with Class 1 covering locksmiths, and a self-employed locksmith also needs a security agent’s licence. You can search names on the WA Police list of current security licence holders.

Locksmiths in Perth: common questions

How much is a locksmith in Perth?
For a house lockout in business hours, expect around $100 to $250 in Perth, and roughly $180 to $350 at night, on weekends or on a public holiday. Budget about $50 to $120 to rekey each lock, or $150 to $400 for a new deadlock, fitted. Some locksmiths add a call-out fee, and the outer suburbs can cost more to reach, so ask for the total first.
Do Perth locksmiths charge a call-out fee?
Many do, often capped somewhere near $120 during the working day and higher after dark or on weekends. Others build travel into the job price, which can work out about the same. In a city as spread out as Perth, ask whether the price changes for your suburb, and confirm one all-in price, GST included, while you're still on the phone.
How do you know you can trust a locksmith?
In WA, anyone doing locksmith work for customers needs a WA Police security licence. Get the number and look it up on the published list of current licence holders. A trustworthy locksmith gives a firm price up front, asks you to prove you live there before opening anything, and tries to pick a lock before drilling it. Be wary of ads with no business name or address.
Is rekeying cheaper than replacing the locks?
Rekeying is almost always cheaper when the locks are in decent shape, at around $50 to $120 a lock and less per lock when several are done in one visit. It changes the internal pins so your old keys no longer turn the cylinder. A new lock is the better buy when the old one is loose, worn out or too basic, or when you want a deadlock or keypad.
Can I rekey my locks myself?
Some locks sold at hardware stores have a user-rekey feature, and you can reset those yourself by following the maker's instructions. Most standard cylinders need a pinning kit and some practice, and a mistake can leave you with a lock that won't open. WA's security licence covers work done for other people, so your own home is fair game, but a locksmith is quicker for a whole house.
What locks can't be rekeyed?
Restricted and patented key systems can usually only be rekeyed by the locksmith who holds that system, and only with the owner's authorisation. Many cheap padlocks, some badly worn locks and certain electronic locks can't be rekeyed at all, so they get replaced instead. Tell the locksmith the brand before the visit so they bring the right cylinders.
