What drives the price

Plumbing prices come down to four things: time, access, parts and when you need it done.

Time. Most plumbers work off an hourly rate, so a quick tap washer is cheap and a long fault-finding job isn’t. Leak detection and blocked sewer lines are the jobs most likely to run over, because nobody knows what’s underground until they look.

Access. Pipes under a slab, in a tight subfloor or behind a tiled wall take longer to reach, and the patching afterwards adds cost. Strata units can add time too, especially when the plumber needs to get into a neighbour’s unit or a shared riser.

Parts. The plumber’s labour is often the smaller part of the bill for a hot water system, a toilet suite or a new mixer. Ask whether the quote includes the part, and whether you can supply your own (some plumbers won’t warranty customer-supplied fittings).

Timing. After-hours rates are real. If water isn’t actively damaging the house, shut it off at the meter and book a normal appointment.

Getting a fair quote

A good quote is written, itemised and specific. It should name the work, the parts, the call-out fee and GST, and say whether the price is fixed or hourly. For licensed work, check the plumber’s licence with your state regulator (our licence checks page lists every state’s lookup) and ask about the compliance certificate you’ll get at the end.

You don’t need five quotes to know whether a price is fair. One quote from a properly vetted plumber, checked against the ranges on this page, will tell you most of what you need. That’s how needatradie works: one licensed local, matched to your job.

Plumber or something else?

Not every water problem is a plumber’s job. Roof leaks usually need a roofer, and water through a shower wall is often a waterproofing problem for a tiler or bathroom specialist. A plumber will tell you if the fix sits with someone else, and we can match you with the right trade.

Plumbers prices by city

CityWhat to expect
Sydney Top of the national range. Around $100–$150 an hour in business hours, with call-outs up to about $200.
Melbourne Close to Sydney. Many plumbers charge around $90–$140 an hour, and older Melbourne homes often add drain and gas work.
Brisbane Mid-range. Storm season pushes up demand for stormwater and roof plumbing from November to March.
Perth Mid-range. Hard water shortens hot water system life, so replacements are a common job.
Adelaide Usually a little under the east coast. Hard water and older galvanised pipes keep plumbers busy.
Gold Coast Similar to Brisbane, with plenty of strata and holiday-unit work.
Newcastle Often a touch under Sydney rates for the same job.
Canberra At the higher end, similar to Sydney. Winter is the busy season for hot water and gas heating jobs.

Plumbers costs: common questions

How much does a plumber charge per hour in Australia?
Most plumbers charge $90 to $150 an hour during business hours. Sydney and Canberra sit at the top of that range, and regional areas often come in lower. After-hours, weekend and emergency rates are higher, commonly $150 to $300 an hour.
What is a plumber's call-out fee?
It's a flat charge for getting to you and starting the job, usually $80 to $200. Some plumbers roll it into the first half hour of labour or waive it if you go ahead with the work. Always ask whether the quote includes it.
Is it cheaper to get a fixed price or pay by the hour?
For a job with a clear scope, like replacing a toilet or a hot water system, a fixed price is easier to compare and protects you from a job that runs long. For fault-finding, such as a leak you can't see, hourly is normal because nobody knows how long it'll take until they find it.
Why do emergency plumbers cost more?
Nights, weekends and public holidays cost plumbers more in wages and lost time, so the hourly rate and call-out fee both go up. If the job can safely wait until business hours, turn the water off at the meter and book for the morning. You'll often save a couple of hundred dollars.
How do I know if a plumbing quote is fair?
Get it in writing, check it lists the work, materials, call-out fee and GST, and compare it against the typical ranges on this page. A much cheaper quote isn't always a bargain. Check the plumber's licence and ask what warranty they give on the work.
