What Sydney homes throw at plumbers
A lot of Sydney’s housing was built before 1970, and the plumbing shows it. Terraces in the inner west and eastern suburbs, federation homes on the north shore and fibro cottages out west often still have terracotta sewer pipes in the ground. Those old joints are exactly where tree roots get in, which is why blocked drains are one of the most common calls a Sydney plumber gets. If your toilet gurgles or the gully trap overflows after rain, roots are a likely suspect.
Big summer storms are the other regular culprit. Overflowing gutters, undersized downpipes and stormwater pits that can’t keep up all end in water where you don’t want it. A plumber can tell you whether it’s a blockage, a fall problem or a pipe that was never big enough.
Then there’s strata. A huge share of Sydney lives in units, and plumbing in a block is a shared puzzle. A leak in your bathroom might be your problem or the owners corporation’s, depending on where the pipe sits. A plumber who does strata work regularly will know the difference and can talk to your strata manager.
Checking a plumber’s licence in NSW
Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting are licensed trades in NSW, and licences are issued by Building Commission NSW. You can check any plumber on the Verify NSW licence check. Look for three things: that the licence is current, that the name matches the person or business quoting you, and that the class covers the job. A plumbing licence doesn’t automatically cover gas, for example.
Before regulated work starts, the plumber should lodge a Notice of Work, and when it’s done they should hand you a Certificate of Compliance. Ask about both up front. A good plumber won’t blink. Our licence checks for NSW page walks through the lookup step by step.
What a plumber costs in Sydney
Sydney prices sit at the higher end of the country. Most plumbers charge somewhere around $100 to $150 an hour during business hours, plus a call-out fee, and after-hours work costs more. A simple tap repair might be a short visit, while clearing a root-choked sewer line with a camera inspection or replacing a hot water system is a bigger spend.
Our plumber price guide has typical ranges for common jobs. Use them to sense-check a quote, then get a written price for your exact job before anyone starts.
