Common pest controller jobs in Canberra

  • Pest inspection reports for a house or townhouse sale, which ACT sellers must supply
  • Termite inspections and treatment, especially near old gum trees and nature reserves
  • European wasp nests in wall cavities, roof voids and garden beds from late summer
  • Spider treatments around decks, sheds, eaves and garden edges
  • Mice and rats moving into roof spaces as the nights turn cold
  • General treatments in late spring before ants and cockroaches get going
  • Flea and bed bug treatments in rentals, share houses and units

Termites in a cold climate

Canberra’s cold winters slow termites down, but they don’t keep them out. Subterranean termites, mainly Coptotermes and Nasutitermes species, cause most of the damage to homes here. Houses close to established gum trees, nature reserves, or timber in contact with the soil, such as old sleeper retaining walls and fence posts, carry more risk.

A lot of older Canberra houses stand on timber bearers and joists over a subfloor, so a proper inspection checks underneath as well as the roof void and the outside walls. Ask for a written report done to AS 3660.2, the standard for termite management in existing buildings. The usual advice is to have one at least once a year.

The ACT also has its own wrinkle at sale time. Once a house or townhouse is on the market, the seller has to have a pest inspection report ready for buyers. That keeps Canberra’s timber pest inspectors busy, and many buyers commission a second, independent inspection before they sign.

Wasps, spiders and mice through the seasons

Pest work in Canberra follows the weather. As spring warms up, ants and spiders come out, and a general treatment in late spring sets you up for summer. European wasps are a well-known Canberra nuisance: nests grow through summer, and the busy season runs from late summer into autumn. Nests turn up in wall cavities, roof voids, the ground and dense shrubs.

When the nights get cold, mice and rats look for somewhere warm, and roof spaces are a favourite. Scratching overhead in May or June is a common reason to call. If it turns out to be a possum, remember they’re protected native animals, so moving one out has to follow ACT wildlife rules.

Checking a pest controller’s ACT authorisation

In the ACT, anyone doing commercial pest control needs an Environmental Authorisation from the ACT Environment Protection Authority. You can search the pest and weed control operators register on Access Canberra, and ask the business for its authorisation number. Ask which products they’ll use and how long kids and pets should stay out afterwards. For other registers, see our ACT licence checks page.

Pest control in Canberra: common questions

How much does pest control cost in Canberra?
A general treatment for cockroaches, spiders, ants and silverfish typically costs around $180 to $400 for a house and $150 to $250 for a unit, with Canberra prices toward the upper end. A termite inspection with a written report is usually $200 to $400. Treating an active termite colony is a bigger job, often $2,000 to $5,000.
What time of year is best for pest control in Canberra?
Late spring suits a general treatment, as insects wake up after the cold and the treatment carries through summer. Wasp nests tend to show up from late summer into autumn, so call as soon as you see the traffic. Termite inspections can happen any time, though termites are most active in the warmer months. Book early in spring, when diaries fill fast.
Is pest control worth paying for?
For the odd ant trail, a supermarket bait will do. Paying a professional makes sense for termites, wasp nests, rodents in the roof and bed bugs, where DIY can make things worse or simply move the problem. A licensed technician has products you can't buy off the shelf, and most treatments come with a written service warranty.
What is the hardest pest to get rid of?
Bed bugs and German cockroaches are notoriously stubborn, because they hide in tiny cracks and can survive products that kill other insects, so they usually need more than one visit. An established termite colony is hard in a different way: the nest can be well away from the damage. In each case, a proper inspection before treatment matters more than the spray.
Do I need a pest inspection to sell a house in Canberra?
Yes, for most homes. ACT law requires sellers of houses and townhouses to have a pest inspection report available to buyers once the property is on the market, along with a building report and an energy efficiency rating. The seller chooses the inspector, so plenty of buyers still book their own independent inspection before exchanging contracts.
Should I deal with a European wasp nest myself?
It's best not to. European wasps defend their nest aggressively and can sting repeatedly, and a disturbed nest inside a wall cavity can send them through the plasterboard and into the house. Don't block the entry hole or spray into it. Keep people and pets away and get a pest controller to treat it.
