Tiling through Canberra’s cold months

Adhesive, grout and waterproofing membranes all cure more slowly in the cold, and an unheated Canberra bathroom gets very cold overnight in July. A careful tiler allows for it: checking each product’s minimum temperature, warming the room where needed, and giving every coat of membrane its full drying time before tiling starts. Rushing that step is how leaks begin, so a winter bathroom may take a day or two longer.

Outside, frost is the bigger risk. Water soaks into porous tiles and grout, freezes overnight and expands, and over a few winters that cracks and lifts them. For patios, entries and steps, choose a porcelain tile rated for frost and slip resistance, laid with a proper fall so water drains away rather than sitting on the surface.

Bathrooms, waterproofing and older homes

Many Canberra bathrooms date from the 1970s and 1980s, with original tiles, ageing grout and waterproofing near the end of its life. When those tiles come up, it’s common to find a failed membrane or water damage in the floor or wall framing, and that has to be repaired before retiling. Wall sheeting and old floor coverings in pre-1990 homes may contain asbestos, so have them checked before demolition starts.

Waterproofing should follow AS 3740, the standard for domestic wet areas. A retile is also the moment to add electric underfloor heating, a welcome extra on a frosty morning. The heating mat goes down before the tiles, and a licensed electrician has to connect it.

Licences and checks for ACT tilers

Tiling and waterproofing aren’t licensed in the ACT yet. The government is weighing up licences for both, but nothing is expected to change before 2027. Until then, look up the tiler’s ABN on ABN Lookup, confirm their public liability cover, and find out who does the waterproofing and what warranty comes with it. If your renovation needs building approval, a licensed builder has to run the job. Our ACT licence check guide shows how to check builders and the other licensed trades.

What tiling costs in Canberra

Canberra tilers charge toward the higher end of the national range. To lay standard floor tiles, that range is roughly $45–$100 a square metre for labour, with the tiles bought separately. Large-format porcelain is slower to lay, at about $60–$130 per m², and wet-area waterproofing adds around $30–$70 per m². For a standard bathroom, floor and walls, labour typically lands between $2,000 and $5,500, while a kitchen splashback is about $400–$1,200. Small repairs are usually billed at $50–$100 an hour. More jobs and rates are in the tiler price guide.

Tilers in Canberra: common questions

How much does it cost to tile a room in Canberra?
Tilers typically charge $45 to $100 a square metre to lay standard floor tiles, Canberra sits toward the upper end, and the tiles cost extra. That puts a 15 m² living-area floor at roughly $700 to $1,500 before tiles, waterproofing or removing old tiles. Labour for a standard bathroom retile, floor and walls, is usually somewhere from $2,000 to $5,500.
How many m² can a tiler do in a day?
There's no set figure, because it depends on the tile and the room. A big open floor with standard tiles and few cuts goes quickly. A bathroom full of cuts around a vanity, toilet and shower niche is much slower per square metre, and waterproofing and grout need curing time between steps. Ask your tiler how many days the whole job will take, not just the laying.
How do I find a good tiler in Canberra?
Look at photos of their finished work, especially showers and corners, where poor set-out shows. Check the ABN and insurance, and ask who handles the waterproofing, which standard it's done to and how long it's guaranteed. A good tiler will want to see the room before quoting and will ask about what's under the floor. Or let us match you with one who's already been checked.
What are the Australian standards for tiling?
The main ones for homes are AS 3740, which covers waterproofing of domestic wet areas, and AS 3958.1, the guide to installing ceramic tiles. The National Construction Code also sets waterproofing requirements for bathrooms and laundries. You don't need to read them, but ask your tiler or waterproofer to confirm their work follows them and to put that in the quote.
How much should I pay a tiler per day?
Day rates are uncommon, because tilers usually price by the square metre or quote the whole job. Repairs and small jobs are charged by the hour, commonly $50 to $100, so an eight-hour day would come to about $400 to $800. For a bathroom or a floor, a fixed quote covering prep, waterproofing, laying and grouting tells you the total before anyone starts.
