Working around Canberra’s weather

Weather decides a lot of Canberra painting. Most exterior paints list a minimum application temperature on the tin, often around 10°C, and the surface has to stay above it while the paint cures. On a frosty winter morning, walls can be wet with dew or close to freezing until late morning, which leaves only a short window to paint. That’s why exterior work bunches up in spring and autumn, and why good painters book out then.

Summer brings its own problems. Canberra’s sun is strong and the air is dry, so paint on a hot, west-facing wall can dry too fast to level out and may show lap marks. Experienced painters follow the shade around the house.

What Canberra homes need from a painter

Many Canberra homes from the 1960s and 1970s are face brick, so an exterior repaint is mostly timber: eaves, fascias, barge boards, windows and doors that the sun has cracked and greyed. Proper prep means scraping back, filling, sanding and priming bare timber before the topcoats, and it’s most of the labour.

If your home was built before 1970, assume the older layers may contain lead. Dry sanding and heat guns spread lead dust, so ask how the painter will prepare those surfaces safely. In unit complexes and townhouses, exterior colours and timing usually need the owners corporation’s sign-off before anyone starts.

Inside, cold winters show up as condensation and mould on bathroom ceilings and around windows in rooms without good ventilation. Painting straight over it only hides it for a season. A painter should clean and treat the mould, use a stain-blocking undercoat and a wet-area paint, but better ventilation is what stops it coming back.

Licences, ABNs and insurance for ACT painters

Unlike NSW, the ACT doesn’t license painters at any job value. The government is considering licensing painting and decorating, but changes aren’t expected before 2027. For now, check the ABN on ABN Lookup, make sure it matches the name on the quote, and ask for public liability insurance. Get the paint brand, product and number of coats in writing too. Our ACT licence check guide covers the trades that are licensed here.

House painting prices in Canberra

Most Canberra painters quote a fixed price after seeing the job. For a guide, painters nationally charge about $65–$100 per hour, or $550–$850 for a day’s work from one painter. For a three-bedroom home in Canberra, an interior repaint commonly costs about $4,500–$7,000. A single room is around $400–$1,000, while the outside of a single-level brick home typically comes to $4,000–$12,000, with weatherboard and two-storey homes costing more. Painters in Canberra: common questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Canberra?
Inside, a typical three-bedroom Canberra home commonly costs around $4,500 to $7,000 to repaint, covering walls, ceilings and trims. The outside of a single-level brick house is usually somewhere from $4,000 to $12,000. Two storeys or timber cladding push that higher, since prep and access take longer. Because prep varies so much, only a fixed quote after a site visit gives you a real number.
What is the best month to paint a house in Canberra?
For exteriors, aim for mid-spring to early summer, or March and April in autumn, when days are mild and dry. Winter mornings are too cold and damp for most exterior paints, and the hottest summer days dry paint too fast. Interiors can be painted any time, and booking them in winter is often easier because outdoor work has dried up.
When should you not paint your house?
Don't paint outside when it's below the minimum temperature on the tin, often around 10°C, when frost or dew is still on the walls, when rain is due before the paint dries, or in strong wind or direct heat on a scorching day. In Canberra that rules out most winter mornings. A good painter will reschedule rather than push on in bad conditions.
Do painters need a licence in the ACT?
No. The ACT doesn't license painters at any job value, though the government is considering it, with changes not expected before 2027. That's different from NSW, where painting work over $5,000 needs a licence, which matters if you live in Queanbeyan. In Canberra, look up the ABN, ask about public liability cover, and make sure the written quote spells out the paint products and coats.
Is my older Canberra home likely to have lead paint?
If it was built before 1970, older layers of paint may well contain lead, even under newer coats. It's only a problem when it's disturbed. Dry sanding, scraping and heat guns release lead dust, which is harmful, especially to children and pregnant women. Ask your painter how they'll test and prepare those surfaces, and keep kids and pets away during prep.
