  • Single bulky items like mattresses, couches and old fridges
  • Move-out loads from units and share houses at the end of a lease
  • Yard clean-ups on rental properties between tenants

Free options to try first

Before paying anyone, see what the ACT Government already covers. Every Canberra household can book one free bulky waste collection each financial year, of up to 2 cubic metres. It takes furniture, white goods, electrical items, metal and bikes, plus mattresses with limits and fees. It doesn’t take garden waste, building materials, soil, tyres or ordinary household rubbish. You can book up to six months ahead, and bookings close 14 days before the pickup.

The Mitchell and Mugga Lane resource management centres also accept a lot for free, including white goods, e-waste such as TVs and computers (up to 15 items per person), household chemicals and gas bottles. Extra green waste can go free to Corkhill Bros at Mugga Lane or the West Belconnen green waste facility. These details change from time to time, so check City Services before you load up.

When a removalist is worth paying for

Free options suit people with time, a trailer and a strong back. Paying someone makes sense when the load is mixed, heavy or awkward: a third-floor walk-up in Belconnen, a garage full of a lifetime’s belongings, or a renovation skip’s worth of timber and plasterboard. It also makes sense when there’s a deadline, like a settlement date or the end of a lease, or when the pile is well past the 2 cubic metre bulky collection limit.

Ask the removalist to sort anything reusable for donation and to send metal and e-waste to recycling. A good operator will tell you where each part of the load is going.

Waste transporter registration and other checks

There’s no trade licence for rubbish removal, but the ACT does regulate who carts waste. Any business collecting household waste needs a Waste Transporter Registration with City Services. There’s no public register, so ask to see it, then check the ABN on ABN Lookup and ask about public liability insurance. Asbestos is the big exception: only a WorkSafe ACT licensed removalist can take it away. You’ll find the WorkSafe ACT register, and the others, on our ACT licence checks page.

Paying for a pickup: Canberra prices

Removalists in Canberra generally charge at the upper end of what you’d pay elsewhere. Roughly, a single bulky item is $80 to $180, a quarter of a truck $180 to $350, and a full load $500 to $900. A 6 m³ skip bin usually runs $350 to $600. Heavy waste like soil and concrete costs more. Our rubbish removal price guide has the full table; it’s a guide, not a quote.

Rubbish removal in Canberra: common questions

Does Canberra offer free rubbish collection?
Yes, within limits. Each Canberra household can book one free bulky waste collection of up to 2 cubic metres every financial year through City Services. It takes furniture, white goods and electrical items, but not garden waste, building materials, soil, tyres, asbestos or general household rubbish. Bookings close 14 days before the collection date, so plan ahead.
How can I dispose of large rubbish in Canberra?
You've got three main options. Book your free bulky waste collection if it hasn't been used this financial year, take a trailer load to the Mitchell or Mugga Lane resource management centre and pay by the load, or pay a removalist to load and cart it. For renovation waste or anything over 2 cubic metres, a removalist or skip bin is usually the practical choice.
How much does it cost to dispose of a mattress in Canberra?
The Mitchell and Mugga Lane resource management centres charge a per-mattress recycling fee, so check City Services' current fees before you go. The bulky waste collection takes mattresses and bed bases too, with limits and fees. A removalist will usually charge around $80 to $180 for a single bulky item like a mattress, which covers the lifting and disposal.
Who can pick up white goods for free in Canberra?
Fridges, freezers, washing machines and dryers can be dropped off free at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane resource management centres, and your free bulky waste collection takes white goods as well. If you're buying a new appliance, ask whether the retailer will take the old one away. Paying a removalist makes sense when you can't lift or move it yourself.
How much does rubbish removal cost in Canberra?
Most removalists price by volume. Expect around $80 to $180 for a single item, $300 to $550 for half a truckload and $500 to $900 for a full load, with Canberra toward the top of those ranges. Heavy loads like soil, bricks and concrete are dearer, since tips charge by weight. Send photos to get a fixed price before booking.
Will a rubbish removalist take asbestos?
No. Asbestos has to go to a removalist licensed by WorkSafe ACT, so a general rubbish business should turn it down. Homes built before about 1990 can have asbestos in fibro sheeting, eaves, old bathroom walls and fences. If something you want gone might be asbestos, leave it in place, don't break it up, and get it checked first.
