Why Sydney tip fees shape your quote

The biggest cost in a Sydney rubbish quote often isn’t the truck or the labour. It’s the tip. NSW charges a waste levy on rubbish that ends up in landfill, and it’s set higher across the Sydney metropolitan area than in regional NSW. Those disposal costs flow straight into what a removalist charges, which is why the same half load can cost more here than in other capitals.

Heavy material is where it bites hardest. Tips weigh soil, bricks, tiles and concrete, and a truck reaches its legal load with them while it still looks half empty. If your load is mostly renovation rubble, say so up front and send photos, so the quote reflects what it really weighs.

Free options first, then the hard stuff

Before paying anyone, check your council. Many Sydney councils run a kerbside clean-up for bulky household items, booked online or on set dates, and it’s free for residents within limits. Community Recycling Centres, funded by the NSW EPA, take paint, gas bottles, batteries, motor oil and fluoro globes from households for free. Usable furniture can go to charity or be sold online.

A paid removalist earns their money where those options fall short: a walk-up unit with no lift, a terrace with no driveway, a deceased estate that needs sorting, or a load that can’t wait for the next council date. In a strata block, check whether you need to book the lift or loading dock first.

Asbestos is the exception to all of this. Fibro sheeting from homes built before about 1990 may contain it, and most removalists and skip companies won’t take it.

No licence, so check these instead

NSW has no licence for general rubbish removal, which makes the other checks matter more. Look the business up on ABN Lookup, ask about public liability insurance, and get a written receipt that says where the waste is going. The NSW EPA requires waste to end up somewhere that’s allowed to take it, and if a cheap operator dumps your load, you as the owner of the waste can share the liability. Be suspicious of any quote so low it couldn’t possibly cover the tip fees. Our NSW licence checks page covers the trades that do need licences, including SafeWork NSW asbestos removalists.

Rubbish removal prices in Sydney

Disposal costs make Sydney one of the dearest places in the country to clear rubbish. Getting rid of one bulky item usually runs $80 to $180; for bigger jobs, think $300 to $550 for half a truckload and $500 to $900 for a full one. Skip bins run from roughly $150 to $300 for a 2 m³ bin up to $350 to $600 for a 6 m³ bin, and Sydney skips often land at the upper end. For skip sizes and clean-out prices, see the rubbish removal price guide; it’s a guide, not a quote.

Matched with one removalist

Send us photos, the details and your suburb. One local removalist who has already cleared our insurance, ABN and review checks gets matched to the job, and your number won’t go to five companies. If you’re still weighing up options, the rubbish removal page and the Sydney trades list may help; otherwise, request a free quote.

Rubbish removal in Sydney: common questions

How much does rubbish removal cost in Sydney?
Removalists here quote by volume, meaning the share of the truck your rubbish takes up. Expect about $80 to $180 to take one mattress or fridge, $300 to $550 for half a truck and $500 to $900 when the truck is full. Heavy waste such as soil, bricks and concrete costs more because tip fees go by weight. Send photos and you'll get a much firmer price.
Where can I get free rubbish removal in Sydney?
Start with your council. Many Sydney councils offer residents a free kerbside clean-up for bulky items, booked online or on set dates, with limits on what and how much. Community Recycling Centres take household problem waste like paint, gas bottles and batteries at no charge, and charities accept furniture in good condition. Paid removal makes sense for big, heavy or urgent loads.
Can I dispose of a mattress myself in Sydney?
Yes. If your council accepts mattresses in its bulky waste clean-up, put it out on the booked date, or take it to a waste facility or mattress recycler, which usually charges a fee. Some retailers will take the old one away when they deliver a new one, sometimes for a fee. A removalist will take it too, often within their minimum charge.
Do I need a council permit for a skip bin in Sydney?
Only if it sits on public land. A skip on your own driveway generally doesn't need one, but a bin on the street or footpath usually needs council approval, which is common on terrace streets with no off-street parking. Many skip companies will apply for you for a fee. Check first, because councils can fine an unapproved bin.
What is the best way to get rid of a lot of rubbish at once?
For a big mixed load, it comes down to who does the lifting. If you'll fill it yourself over a few days and have room on the driveway, a skip bin is often cheaper. If you want it loaded and gone in one visit, or there are stairs and no parking, a removalist is the better deal. Pull out anything recyclable first to cut disposal costs.
