Smoke alarms and the 2027 deadline

Queensland’s smoke alarm rules reach every home on 1 January 2027. Rentals and homes being sold have had to comply since 2022, and from that date owner-occupied houses, townhouses and units must too. Each home needs photoelectric alarms that meet AS 3786:2014, interconnected so they all sound together, in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on every storey.

The alarms can be hardwired or run on a sealed 10-year battery, but where the existing alarms are hardwired, the replacements must be hardwired too, and that’s a job for a licensed electrician. With the deadline only a few months away, it makes sense to book well before the end of the year rather than in the final weeks.

Storms, salt and the Energex network

The Gold Coast’s summer storm season is hard on outdoor electrics. Water finds its way into garden lights, pool equipment and weathered outdoor power points, and a safety switch that trips during heavy rain is often pointing at one of them. Near the beach, salt air corrodes exposed fittings faster, so outdoor gear rated for the weather, and checked now and then, lasts longer.

Energex runs the poles, wires and street connections across south-east Queensland, the Gold Coast included. Work on the connection to your home, such as a service upgrade for a big ducted system or an EV charger, is arranged through your electrician and Energex. The NSW Level 1 and Level 2 system you may read about online doesn’t apply here.

In apartment towers, new circuits often mean getting into a locked meter room or running cable through common property, so the building manager and sometimes the body corporate need to be involved before work starts.

Checking an electrician’s licence in Queensland

Every bit of electrical work in Queensland, from swapping a light switch to rewiring a house, has to be done by a licensed electrician. The Electrical Safety Office issues those licences, and a business doing electrical work for customers also needs an electrical contractor licence. Ask for that number and check it on the Electrical Licence Search.

When installation work is finished, the contractor must give you a certificate of testing and compliance. Keep it with your house papers. Our Queensland licence checks page has the lookups for other trades.

What Gold Coast electricians charge

Rates on the Gold Coast run much like Brisbane’s. Expect around $90–$140 an hour during the working day, with a call-out fee of roughly $80–$150 on top. A hardwired smoke alarm usually costs $120–$200 per alarm, and interconnecting several adds to that. A ceiling fan is typically $150–$400 plus the fan, a dedicated air con circuit $250–$450, and a switchboard upgrade $800–$2,500.

Meter room access in a high-rise can add time, so mention it when you ask for a price. The electrician price guide lists more jobs. The figures are indicative, so get the real price in writing.

Electricians in Gold Coast: common questions

How much do electricians charge per hour on the Gold Coast?
Most Gold Coast electricians charge around $90 to $140 an hour in business hours, roughly in line with Brisbane. On top of that, expect a call-out fee of about $80 to $150, which usually covers travel and the first 15 to 30 minutes. Emergency and after-hours work often costs $150 to $300 an hour, so batch small jobs into one daytime visit where you can.
What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 electrician?
Level 1 and Level 2 are New South Wales accreditations for work on the electricity network, so you won't need either on the Gold Coast. In Queensland, a licensed electrician does the wiring inside your home. For a new connection, a service upgrade or a meter change, your electrician works with Energex and your energy retailer to arrange the network side.
Do I have to upgrade my smoke alarms by 2027?
If you own and live in a Queensland home, yes. From 1 January 2027, every home needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in each bedroom, in hallways linking bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on every level. Rentals and homes being sold already need them. If your current alarms are hardwired, a licensed electrician has to fit hardwired replacements.
How do I find a good residential electrician on the Gold Coast?
Check the electrical contractor licence on the ESO's Electrical Licence Search first, then ask for a written quote that spells out the work and the price. Good residential sparkies explain what they found, tell you when an upgrade is needed and when it isn't, and leave a certificate of testing and compliance when they finish. Recent local reviews help too.
Who do I call if the power goes out on the Gold Coast?
If the neighbours are out too, it's a network fault, so check Energex's outage information or ring its faults line. If it's only your home, look at the switchboard, because a tripped safety switch is the usual culprit. Try resetting it once. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and call an electrician, and stay well clear of any fallen powerlines.
