Humidity, salt and getting the size right
On the Gold Coast, air con works on moisture as much as heat. Long, sticky summers mean systems run for hours at a time, and a correctly sized unit with a good dry mode keeps rooms comfortable without turning them into a fridge. An undersized unit runs flat out and still feels muggy, so ask the installer to size it from the room, the windows and which way it faces rather than a rule of thumb.
Salt is the other enemy. Outdoor units near the surf or the Broadwater corrode faster than inland ones. Ask about models with corrosion-protected coils, a sheltered spot for the condenser where possible, and a service schedule that includes rinsing salt off the outdoor coil.
Apartments and body corporate approval
Apartment installs bring their own rules. The outdoor unit usually sits on a balcony or in a plant area, and where it goes, how the pipes run and where the condensate drains are often set by the building’s by-laws. Get body corporate approval in writing before you book, and ask whether the building has a set location or bracket for condensers.
Condensate is a common cause of neighbour complaints. A drain that drips onto the balcony below or stains the facade can land you in a dispute, so the installer should run it to a proper drain point. In towers, also check whether lifts and parking need booking for installation day.
Licences for air con work
Air con installation is licensed three ways in Queensland. The installer needs a QBCC Mechanical services licence for air-conditioning and refrigeration whatever the job is worth, plus an ARCtick refrigerant handling licence, which you can check on Look for the Tick. Any new circuit or wiring is a job for a licensed electrician. Check the QBCC licence on the QBCC licensee register, and see our Queensland licence checks for the other lookups.
Air con prices on the Gold Coast
Prices here are similar to Brisbane. A standard split system usually costs $1,500–$3,000 supplied and installed, or $600–$1,500 to install a unit you’ve already bought. Large splits for open-plan living run about $2,000–$4,500, multi-head systems $4,500–$11,000, and ducted reverse-cycle systems $8,000–$18,000 for most houses. A dedicated power circuit adds around $250–$450, and a service and clean is typically $120–$300 per split.
Second-storey brackets, long pipe runs and apartment access all add time. The air con price guide has more detail, and its ranges are indicative rather than a quote for your home.
